Through this holy anointing may the Lord in his love and mercy, help you with the grace of the Holy Spirit. Amen
May the Lord who frees you from sin save you and raise you up. Amen
At the heart of the ministry of Jesus Christ is healing, physical, spiritual, emotional; body, mind and spirit. It is no wonder that the disciples continued to heal in his name as a sign of the presence of God’s Kingdom among us.
In time the practice of praying for healing involved the laying on of hands and anointing with oil by a priest. It is numbered as one of the Seven Sacraments of the Church.
In the Middle Ages this Sacrament was limited to those who were coming to the end of their earthly lives, and was called ‘Extreme Unction’. In more recent times the Sacrament was celebrated more generally and after the Second Vatican Council (1962-65) when all Seven Sacraments were renewed, priests were encouraged to celebrate the Anointing of the Sick with those who are in need of healing.
In this parish the Sacrament is celebrated in hospitals, nursing homes, people’s own homes and occasional Sunday Masses. It is a wonderful Sacrament which brings great peace of mind and a real experience of the healing Christ to those who are anointed.
